Has the power to leave you speechlessAs the saying goes, better late than never. The whole world may have missed this smashing 2007 album, but the gods have decided to right wrongs and grant Evolution's "Marcator Project" its time of day here at Maximum Metal.
Getting straight to the point, "Marcator Project" is hands-down one of the decade's most exciting albums. Is this too generous? It's okay because these Filipino-Canadians deserve it. "Marcator Project" is the career-defining opus of an incredible band who have a rather generic name, which isn't such a big deal considering how potent their music is. Right from the 0:01 mark, a furious drum roll starts album opener "Can't Get Enough" and at the drop of a last energized beat the band get into gear. Once this happens, becoming hooked on their sound is unavoidable.
Evolution play Heavy Metal steeped in Ozzy Osbourne's classic records, so if you ever dug "Bark At the Moon," "No Rest For The Wicked," and even the recent "Black Rain," Evolution takes the best of the Ozzman and brings it to another level. And what made The Prince of Darkness so entertaining, you might ask? Aside from exposing his buttocks, that would be the incredible solos from Rhoads, Lee, and Wylde; then there's the energy and imagination that fueled the songs on his best work. Evolution possess the same shazzzam and for an independent release such as this, the production doesn't let the band down. Each song is guaranteed to give you goose bumps. Try "Look Out," "Friend," and the grooving "Girls Girls."
If you love hooks, an avalanche of melody, and music that injects your veins with adrenaline, Evolution are destined for a coveted space in your CD collection. There is absolutely no way you cannot dig this album. Scorchers like "On The Run," "Old," "Make It Home," and "Don't Care" will endear themselves to your ears once the driving guitar riffs and crashing drums explode from your speakers. Looking beyond their similarities to Ozzy, Evolution play undiluted Heavy Metal whose residue runs in the veins of every metalhead, and here lies their greatest appeal.
More than clones, more than a collection of powerful songs, cosmic forces have contrived to bless Evolution on their sixth album. "Marcator Project" has the power to leave you speechless.
