Band Mortiis Title Some Kind Of Heroin Type LP/EP Company Earache YOR 2007 Style Industrial Popular Reviews 10/6/2008 - Review by: David Loveless
Mortiis (the man) has come a long way musically since his early days of being Emperor's bass player. Playing in musical styles such as Black Metal and Dark Ambient, Mortiis now devotes his (and his bands) time to Electropop, Industrial Rock and Electronica. The latest release from Mortiis (the band), is Some Kind of Heroin, a collection of remixes of songs taken from their previous album known as The Grudge. Right off the bat, this album can be compared to the early works of Nine Inch Nails. However, there are several subtle differences. One is the vocal style of Mortiis, as his vocals are a bit more intense than that of Trent Reznor. The other difference is the massive guitar sound. The riffs - although simple and sparse at times - is very aggressive and loud in the mix. Unfortunately, the Electropop, industrial remix thing just does not do it for me. Although, I liked their previous effort, The Grudge, the songs sound more superficial and desperate. For this reason, I have never been a fan of remix albums - no matter what the song is and by which band it is from. Loyal followers of Mortiis will probably dig this CD, but devoted black metal fans (such as myself) that have followed Mortiis out of spite, will not get into this release. This CD sounds like it belongs more in a dance club than played live at a rock concert. If Electropop and industrial rock is your thing, then you just might like this album. However, if you are a raging death and/or black metal fan, stay away from this album! ALL REVIEWS FOR: MORTIIS
