Band Metallica Title Some Kind of Monster Type DVD Company Paramount Home Video YOR 2005 Style Heavy/Extreme Popular Reviews   How far we've come from the pomp and self-indulgence of Led Zeppelin's 70's movie classic 'The Song Remains the Same' to the modern, reality TV of Metallica's 'Some Kind of Monster'. Escapist fantasies and hedonism have given way to self-discovery and band counseling.I watch a bunch of reality shows--it's a guilty pleasure, so having missed the theater release of Metallica's two years of intensive group therapy and making of 'St. Anger', I picked up the DVD of 'SKOM'. To me, it was really more like 'Some Kind of Boring'. From these kind of shows, I don't need all the scenes of the grand lifestyle they have (million dollar paintings, ranches, etc.). Besides the detailed making of the CD, I want a bunch of chaos and in-fighting, but SKOM felt more like the ambivalent, cloud-heavy period of a pre-breakup with James' inner demons keeping the band almost as outsiders for many, many months while he seeks help for addictions and personal issues. Kirk is easy-going and rarely in the fray except for an interesting spot about guitar solos. Lars is all over the place showing more sides than the picked-on rambler that he's usually portrayed as. Much promotion was made in the metal press of his sit-down tearfest with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, but it was over-hyped and way too short. The most interesting and probably only tense scene was Lars' confrontation of James and his new post-rehab direction where Lars bucks against the control (12-4 workday) and says basically fuck all these rules we're a rock n' roll band. Defected bassist and scowler, Jason Newsted was shown, somewhat unflatteringly, moving on with his life and it's quite a site to see the new bassist, Robert Trujillo, be offered a million dollar signing bonus after winning an audition. Nice to see they took time to show moments with Cliff Burton, also. It is real, but my vote is that if you're looking for back-stabbing clashes more than dreary vacillating, stick with MTV shows and rent this one first before you buy.
