Talk about a slam to the face!! This Norwegian 3-some doesn't waste time with any wishy-washy build to momentum! From the opener, 'The Power,' you're taken on a thunderous journey into the future of death metal! Formed in 2001, Grimfist began their career with 'Ghouls of Grandeur,' an album recorded at Abyss Studios and produced by Peter Tagtgren. This sophmore offering was recorded at Subsonic Society Studios and was released in the US in November of 2005. Vocalist, Frediablo, does a fine job of mixing the gutteral death growl with cleaner, more haunting tones. Guitarist, Ole Walaunet, displays a heavy thrash influence and in track 6, 'The Ashes of the Gods,' treats us to riffing that is above and beyond the usual death metal thump-wah-thump. Christian Svendsen takes over behind the kit, replacing former drummer, Horgh, and carries his weight quite adequately.
I have one complaint with this album. Throughout the disc, there are spots where the volume slowly fades, then just as slowly surges back. What is this?! Is this a production glitch? Is it a purposeful 'nuance' to the straight-ahead death metal face blast? Whether this was an error or a studio effect, it's a distraction from an otherwise perfect metal album.
