Bombastic assault on the ears

Sweden's Heavy Demons have put out their second full length album, 'Twice', and with it have continued down the thrash/death path they began on 2010's 'Tenebra'. The melding of the thrash and death sounds creates what is just an incredibly heavy and bombastic assault on the ears. With blast beat drumming, chainsaw guitars and thundering bass, your ears will veritably start bleeding if you listen to this too loudly. Vocally, singer Jack Demon wields his voice with a death metal gruffness that also has that staccato thrash bark cadence. While the band aren't breaking any walls down with their sound or style, they are quite proficient at it and the songs generally flow together pretty well. I found myself losing interest about two-thirds of the way through the album and felt that the songs were starting to bleed together a little. Then I hit "Falling Nimbus", which is hands down my favorite track off the album. A thrash riff starts it off with some magnificent drumming backing it up for some thick crunch. The vocals are Demon's most guttural of the album and feel evil and awesome. Midway through the song the riff takes a distinctively death metal turn with a lot of groove and heavy distortion combined with speed picking. Overall this track is what I'd have liked the rest of the album to sound like. With more death vocals incorporated and a bit more groove, I think Heavy Demons has the ability to really have a solid output next time around and hopefully find themselves with a bit more identity.
