True to their claim, Perpetual Burning is sometimes reminiscent of the New York metal school--Immolation, Suffocation, et al--albeit with a much more blackened core. More importantly, they also lack the qualities that make those bands legendary. Vocals are awkwardly prominent in the mix with a slap-back echo that makes lyrics about "demons in my eyes" sound even sillier than they should. The production overall is inconsistent and amateurish. The musicians seem proficient--the drummer most of all--but unimaginative. One song blends into another and 'Perpetual Suffering' soon becomes an unintentionally apt name for this one-and-done band.
