Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Concept album that is just expertly executed and rich with content
Swedish metal band Throne of Heresy have really delivered a fascinating concept album with the upcoming 'Decameron'. The album explores the Black Plague from its beginnings and ends on the Ostragothian shores where the band calls home. The music as a whole is really well done as it really mirrors each track's lyrical content. So, you get passages of frenetic, aggressive music that seems to signify the arrival and onset of the plague and more subtle music to portray the somber, funereal atmosphere of areas decimated by the BP. Lyrically the album is just incredibly intricate and something that you need to have with you while you are listening to the album to really appreciate what the band has done with this release. I can't remember a concept album that has been so well done that has also captured my attention like this since Edge of Haze's 2014 release, 'Illumine'. If you are a fan of concept albums, enjoy getting into the lyrics of well crafted songs or just like your metal epic, then you need to go out and get your hands on 'Decameron' by Throne of Heresy. It'll check all the buttons and provide with a really phenomenal listening experience.
