Undulating, cavernous, occasionally rocking yet tinged with melancholy, 'Sweven' is Morbus Chron's coming of age. Once more crusty and stomping, this second LP is loosely classifiable as progressive death metal for its aural density, deeper register, unconventional structures/meters, and heavily verbed vocals akin to early Death (frankly a weak spot). But these young Swedes refuse to be boxed in, jamming 55 minutes with with hiccuping riffs, cagey instrumental passages, clean interludes, sneakily placed solos, and a natural but unpredictable flow that juggles jerky chromaticism with rousing themes. Fans of Dawnbringer will be tantalized.
