Familiar sound record after recordThe thirteenth album from Denmark's premier hard rock outfit. The band can do no wrong and have proved time and time again that they are masters of their profession. Pretty Maids have compiled an amazing career that originated in the 80s and built around effective vocal notes layered on keyboards and crunchy guitar. If the Beatles were hard rock they would have often sounded like the Maids.
The band chose Jacob Hansen to produce once again based on the strong production quality he brought to the last album "Pandemonium" (2010). The group have utilized the same formula for the last three decades and it still works well today. "Motherland" incorporates ballads and blasters into a diverse album that contributes to the longevity of the band. Few bands can get away with a familiar sound record after record but Pretty Maids continue to write great songs.
The blasters include "Who What Where When How" and "Hooligan", both of which are beefy guitar licks with heavy groove, ascending leads and Ronnie's immortal vocals (he's got to be 60). The ballads are wimpy but emotional, highlights are the love-me-tender "Bullet For You" and "Infinity". I like the band's mid-tempo stuff, especially strong opener/lead off singles "Mother Of All Lies" and "Fate Of A Nation".
If you are an older fan or a brand new one you just have to respect a band that have focused determination. They would rather burn out than fade away and that is commendable. My hats off to the band for pushing the heavy load year after year.
