Mesmerizing guitar work and plenty of crushing riffs
Honestly, Annihilator is better with Jeff Waters singing. 'For the Demented', the Canadian thrashers new record, continues to prove that fact since taking the reins back on 'Suicide Society' (vocalist David Padden left in 2014). 'For the Demented' has a noticeable throwback feel to it with crisp modern production. Jeff's always mesmerizing guitar work is on display throughout, including plenty of crushing riffs. This time around Waters takes the time to show off his distinct voice and displays a diversity on songs like the Danko Jones styled "The Way" and “Not All There" which includes a sweet and unexpected funky breakdown. At times though, there is a strong Mustaine inflection that's most notable on the catchy "The Demon You Know". This one could have been placed on any late 90's Megadeth album.
In my opinion, this is their most solid offering in almost 20 years, apart from maybe 'Feast'. This is all thanks to tracks like the opening duo of blistering thrash songs-- "Twisted Lobotomy" and "One to Kill" followed by standout songs like the slower paced, morbid “Pieces of You" and the moody "Phantom Asylum". It has a bridge I can only describe as the perfect soundtrack to a heavy metal western.
Only one question remains--where does Annihilator go in the future now that they have looked at the past?
