Evanesce play pretty average Swedish death metal ala At The Gates and Dark Tranquility. The only real difference here is the fact that Evanesce hail from England. This new EP, out now on No Face Records, is the debut release from this young Liverpool band.
One thinks of the early sounds of Callenish Circle and Novembers Doom with opening track "Final Amnesia ". Evanesce likes to throw some downtuned playing in with their brand of melodic death metal to add a bit of a doomy dimension to the take. "Near Life Experience" rushes the line with an overdose of Gothenburg styled death metal with plenty of twin guitar and cookie monster growls. "Reclaimed Land" is almost Floridian death metal, with some extremely raw vocals ala Glen Benton (Deicide) in his youth.
This type of thing has really been done to death, no pun intended. I really wish we could hear something new and fresh from these acts, but thus far they seem really pleased just playing what has lately become very stale, standard death metal. Not really my thing, but others may eat this up.
