Punishing thrash that is nothing short of outstanding

France's Deficiency unleashed their sophomore album "The Prodigal Child" on the masses in October 2013. After just being turned on to this band, I felt the need to review their full album.

This quartet delivers punishing thrash that is nothing short of outstanding. Their use of the traditional thrash vocals mixed with death growls and clean vocals reminds me a bit of the newer Mercenary albums but TPC is full of its own flavor. From start to finish this album has one goal--make you bang your head so hard that you kill your remaining brain cells. Well, I can officially say that happened with me. Songs like "Unfinished", "Those Who Behold" and "The Flaw" make sure you'll have no problem doing just that.

Vocalist/guitarist Laurent Gisonna delivers great thrash vocals but his clean vocals are what really caught my attention. The emotion and timbre of his clean vocals are hypnotic and paralyzing. The twin guitar work of Gisonna and rhythm guitarist Jerome Meichelbeck are the highlight of the album. This duo knows how to craft great metal riffs and execute them with with a surgical precision. You can tell from listening to the album that both of these guys have some classical and jazz influences, especially on the bridgework and interludes in the songs.

The tempo changes and classical intros that give way to face smashing riffs makes you sit back and realize just how talented this band truly is.
