There are genres in metal that I don't really tend to care for and doom is one of them. It's not that I have a deep-seated hatred for doom, it just doesn't do much for me. Those plodding riffs that go on for way too long and the vocals that emote despair in spades just gets tiresome after a while. Add in some death metal to spice it up and most times I'm still pretty disenchanted while listening. However, with Vanha's latest release, 'Melancholia', all of that went out the window. This is a doom album that truly made me feel as though I was in the deepest of despair with no hope of coming out of it at all. I think for me that was what was missing on a lot of the doom I listened to. I'm sure I'll catch some hell for that statement but I stand by it. With Vanha though, you can feel the depression and despair ooze through your speakers with each note of the music and each word that is growled. The combo of doom and death vocals is incredibly well utilized and constructed so that they feed off of each other to really give the album a complete feel. The heaviness of the riffs is intentional as to lend to the atmosphere that the album culls from start to finish. Fans of doom delight in this album and those of you, much like myself, who never really gave doom metal the time of day, you should definitely go out and give this album a spin.
