Cephalic Carnage's new effort, "Halls of Amenti", sees the band abandon their grindcore roots for a brutal doom style. Released on Willowtip Records (www.willowtip.com) earlier this year, this album showcases many elements of the band that you never would consider possible if you listen to their previous albums on Relapse.
The album is a single of sorts, one 19-minute doom metal song broken into four sections. It is the first of three Cephalic Carnage releases on Willowtip. The other two will supposedly each be one track, much in the same vein as this one. It essentially keeps the same tempo throughout, and rarely does the tone change. However, this is some of the best doom I've heard. It even features a rare clean vocal segment that you probably will never hear again on any Cephalic release.
I've never been a big fan of doom, and have actually found it to be rather boring at times, but this release keeps you pretty intrigued. After hearing a band's style for so long, you're really kept on your toes wondering what they'll do next when they change things up a bit. Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of Cephalic Carnage or doom metal. And hey, if all else fails, it's good to go to sleep too. Reviewed by --Aborted Fetus Smasher 2.24.03
