Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

7/17/2020 - Review by: Greg Watson
Quality blackened death metal with a few twists
Live Burial has given us one of the best death metal albums of 2020 thus far with 'Unending Futility'. With seven tracks of vintage death metal, this album is sure to appease fans of the genre who yearn for the older days when bands like Death, Asphyx and Bolt Thrower were ruling the roost. The songs on the album all have this veiled doom element to them that you can hear in some of the chuggy, plodding riffs but classic death metal is what this band is really all about. The vocals remind me of a very young Chuck Schuldiner combined with a little bit of Johnny Hedlund from Unleashed. The raw, searing vocals drip with emotion and punctuate the songs perfectly. There is also a good bit of melody thrown in with the guitar work but enough to keep it from falling into the realm of melo-death. The production is crisp, classic and all you could ask for in a dm release. Each song is unique in their own way but as a collective flow very well and give you a very cohesive listening experience. Search no further dm fans, run out and prepare to bludgeon your way through this one and revel in the death metal goodness that will wash over you as you play your way through the album.
Recommended for fans of: Asphyx, Cancer, Gruesome, Skeletal Remains
