Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

  • Filth aptly describes this album

  • Evermore Darkly is the newest release by Cradle of Filth and "filth" aptly describes this album. Those familiar with COF know that they are a black metal band known for the conceptual albums and creepy, ethereal vocals. This album departs very far from those roots and is by far one of the worst offerings I have heard from the band in a while.

The vocals on the album are most times a spoken word feel and when the screams and shrieks come in they sound forced, almost as if singer Dani Filth's voice doesn't want to do them anymore. Then there is an actual attempt at singing on tracks "Thank Your Lucky Scars" and "The Persecution Song". Then there are the odd songs "Forgive Me Father (I'm In a Trance)" and "Summer Dying Fast". The prior is just what it says, a song you would hear if you went to a rave. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all about trying new things and trying to advance the growth as an artist, but this is almost too much in my opinion. As for "Summer Dying Fast" it sounds like a cheer written for a heavy metal cheerleading squad.

The music on the album is somewhat typical Cradle, with the exception of the aforementioned tracks, bombastic classical pieces and very melodic guitars. If the vocals matched the music a little better this wouldn't be too bad. But as it is, this is one of the biggest wastes of my time as far as this band is concerned. So, fellow metal heads unless you are a die hard fan of this band, don't even waste your time on this one. Save your money for better things.
