Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. Crash Music has just about covered all the bases this first part of 2005. From standard death metal in Relentless, power metal in Myon, thrash metal in Flotsam & Jetsam, gothic metal in Unshine, and now black metal with the likes of Kult ov Azazel and now Evemaster. "MMIV Lacrimae Mundi" marks the third record from Finland's Evemaster, a band that seems to be gaining attention with their brand of melodic mayhem. As bands like Children Of Bodom, Throne Of Chaos, and Evemaster journey on, the thin barrier between power metal and extreme seems to be weakening, with nothing more than vocal delivery between the two genres at this point.

Evemaster play a dynamic brand of extreme metal, with plenty of twin guitar harmony and the most vicious of vocalists in Taskula, a young man who has a sinister black metal range. The group certainly display the razzle/dazzle of an Iron Maiden or In Flames but at the same time they mix in well timed keyboard arrangements and deep group vocal chants. The band never stray far from their fast tempo pace, only tempting the listener with gothic overtones before heading back into the storm.

Songs like "Embraced" and "Equinox Nocturne" play the part of the diverse metal musician, with plenty of atmospheric elements and sleepy keys for effect. The group mix it up nicely however, throwing fastballs like "Whispers" and "Lucrimae Mundi" right down the plate. Evemaster also mix in some session musicians for clean vocals and the synth effects. Overall this has been done before but for the most part the band keep it interesting. Nice artwork and packaging!
