Belgium's Aborted have created quite the slab of melodic grinding death metal with Slaughter & Apparatus: A Methodical Overture. Certainly owing much to Carcass, though not nearly as much as the myriad of Razorback bands that, bless 'em, have made a science of morphing their mighty methodology into slightly mutated offspring of the masters. Aborted take the melodic leanings of Symphonies of Sickness and Necroticism and give the beast a modern reworking. The chops of a 21st century band with the songwriting skills of the originators results in an album that is a rewarding listen and fun romp through the gory fields of carnage that are well-trampled already, but seldom stomped with this much ferocity. Aborted may not be breaking new ground here, but there is no denying how good the band is at what they do, and if I have room for more of anything in my life, it's hamburgers. And if I have room for anything besides hamburgers, it's another solid death metal album that delivers the goods, and that is just what we have in Slaughter & Apparatus: A Methodical Overture.
