Note: Reviews are graded from 0-5, anything higher or not showing is from our old style. Scores, however, do not reveal the important features. The written review that accompanies the ratings is the best source of information regarding the music on our site. Reviewing is opinionated, not a qualitative science, so scores are personal to the reviewer and could reflect anything from being technically brilliant to gloriously cheesy fun.

Demos and independent releases get some slack since the bands are often spent broke supporting themselves and trying to improve. Major releases usually have big financial backing, so they may be judged by a heavier hand. All scores can be eventually adjusted up or down by comparison of subsequent releases by the same band. We attempt to keep biases out of reviews and be advocates of the consumer without the undo influence of any band, label, management, promoter, etc.

The best way to determine how much you may like certain music is to listen to it yourself.

Early thrash and raw guitar sound

2. Meltdown
3. Left to Die
4. Mary Celeste
It's good to hear that metal is still alive in the U.S. Byfist reminds me of when metal was starting to branch out into early thrash and the raw guitar sound is very reminiscent of Metallica's "Kill 'em All". Vikk Real's vocals sound a bit flat to me at times like on the chorus of the first number, but damn can he hit the high range notes which I preferred. All the dogs in my neighborhood perked up and looked toward my house when "Meltdown" stared. The first three numbers don't quite make it to the level of the top 80's thrash bands like Anthrax and Megadeth, but "Mary Celeste", which is a true story about a crewless, pristine ship found floating in the Atlantic, is a good, solid effort. Going by the demo only, Byfist needs some work to move from a B-level to an A-level product. A bigger issue may be whether or not their style is still relevant to today's market. If Byfist can continue to improve their sound and perform on the level of the last track, then they should be able to create their own audience.
