Atmospheric metal from New Jersey that hits the mark
Afar's debut album "Selfless" brings good atmospheric black metal to the table in heaping helpings. The album is a 50/50 mix of clean, effervescent instrumentation & cold, aggressive black metal stylings. Vocally you get traditional black metal throughout which adds to the cold, bleak feeling of the album as a whole. For me what sealed this as a quality release was the overall feel of the album. I could put "Selfless" on regardless of my mood and get lost in the music and atmosphere easily. There are a lot of bands coming out and playing this style of black metal now and Afar have definitely thrown themselves into the ring with "Selfless".
