Doom metal tends to come in three categories: heavy, heavier and MASSIVE!!
I can say with no uncertainty that this debut offering from the Minnesota-based The Mighty Nimbus clicks with that third category. The album is marked by deep, soul-grinding riffage from beginning to end, with only a few moments in between to give the listener a chance to catch their breath. My initial listen put me in mind of bands like Alabama Thunderpussy, Sixty Watt Shaman and The Obsessed. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that TMN is actually made up of members from Alabama Thunderpussy and Sixty Watt Shaman! This album is heavy, without taking on some of the more oppressively heavy, plodding elements that have been associated with Doom, making that particular branch of the metal genre an acquired taste. I dont see fans of other styles of metal or heavy rock having a problem with this, and who knows, this could be the band and the album to push Doom to the forefront of the metal scene.
